چکیده

biologist in Singapore? Singapore is an extremely attractive place to live and work for both Asians and non-Asians. English is spoken by everyone and it has become a very appealing place for Asian (typically, but not exclusively, Chinese and Indian) and non-Asian (from North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand) researchers trained elsewhere to move to. For the Asians, this is home or close to home, while non-Asians get to experience a different culture, by living and working here. There has also been a tremendous push to raise the profile of life sciences in schools and colleges. Various scholarship and fellowship schemes have been instituted by governmental and private agencies to encourage more Singaporeans to take up higher education in the life sciences. By capitalizing on all these features, Singapore hopes to make life-science-based industry a major focus of its economy. The government, as well as other organizations have invested a great deal into the life sciences. The ‘Agency for Science, Technology and Research’ has been mandated with effecting the biomedical revolution and runs a number of institutes carrying out biomedical research. Then there are the universities, which are also involved in life science research. I work in an exceptional institute — the Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory — run by Drosophila cell biologist Bill Chia. We broadly focus on cellular and developmental biology, where our investigators are involved in curiosity-driven-research using a variety of model organisms, covering plant, animal, fungi and bacteria. The majority of activity in all research organizations is in training manpower and in generating intellectual property. The impact of Singapore’s life science investments on biotechnology industry and economy should come soon and this will make it satisfying for everyone involved. I certainly think we are moving in the right direction.

Categorization of Synaesthesia

This article is an attempt to synthesize the current knowledge about synaesthesia from many fields such as literature, arts, multimedia, medicine, or psychology. The main goal of this paper is to classify various types and forms of synaesthesia. Besides developmental synaesthesia being likely to play a crucial role in developing cognitive functions (constitutional or neonatal synaesthesia) ther...

Is Synaesthesia More Prevalent in Autism Spectrum Conditions? Only Where There Is Prodigious Talent

Savant syndrome is a condition where prodigious talent co-occurs with developmental difficulties such as autism spectrum conditions (ASC). To better understand savant skills, we previously proposed a link with synaesthesia: that savant syndrome may arise in ASC individuals who also happen to have synaesthesia. A second, unrelated claim is that people with autism may have higher rates of synaest...

Psychophysiological evidence for the genuineness of swimming-style colour synaesthesia.

Recently, swimming-style colour synaesthesia was introduced as a new form of synaesthesia. A synaesthetic Stroop test was used to establish its genuineness. Since Stroop interference can occur for any type of overlearned association, in the present study we used a modified Stroop test and psychophysiological synaesthetic conditioning to further establish the genuineness of this form of synaesth...

Acquiring synaesthesia: insights from training studies

Synaesthesia denotes a condition of remarkable individual differences in experience characterized by specific additional experiences in response to normal sensory input. Synaesthesia seems to (i) run in families which suggests a genetic component, (ii) is associated with marked structural and functional neural differences, and (iii) is usually reported to exist from early childhood. Hence, syna...

an synaesthesia research inform ognitive science ?

The renaissance of synaesthesia research has produced many insights regarding the aetiology and mechanisms that might underlie this intriguing phenomenon, which abnormally binds features between and within modalities. Synaesthesia is interesting in its own right, but whether it contributes to our knowledge of neurocognitive systems that underlie non-synaesthete experience is an open question. I...

Is synaesthesia one condition or many? A large-scale analysis reveals subgroups.

Synaesthesia is a broadly defined neural phenomenon in which stimulation of a sense or concept triggers a second perception not normally associated with the stimulus. For example, letters or numbers may trigger a colour experience, sounds may trigger a taste sensation, or tastes may trigger a feeling of touch. Dozens of forms of synaesthesia have been reported, but the relationship between the ...
